To treat male pattern baldness, the U.S and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two drugs.
- Finasteride (Propecia, Proscar): This is a pill that you take daily. It’s only available with a prescription from your doctor.
- Minoxidil (Rogaine): Rogaine is available over the counter as a liquid. To grow hair apply it to the scalp twice a day and prevent hair loss.
It may take up to a year to see results for both of these drugs and you’ll need to keep taking them to maintain the benefits
2. Hair Transplants
The two most popular hair transplant procedures are follicular unit extraction and follicular unit transplantation:
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
Where there’s an abundance of hair it involves removing some skin from the back of your scalp, then reinserting the hair follicles into the part of the scalp where you’re experiencing hair loss and removing the follicles from that strip of skin.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
In FUE, transplanted to the bald parts of the scalp and hair follicles are removed directly from the scalp.
It can be expensive and maybe painful so keep in mind that a hair transplant is considered a surgery
Including infections and scarring, there are also certain risks. To get the desired outcome you may also need to do multiple hair transplant treatments.
3. Laser Treatment
To reduce the inflammation in follicles laser treatment is thought that keeps them from regrowing.
In treating hair loss there are limited studies to support their effectiveness, but when used to treat male pattern hair loss a 2016 review determined that low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is safe and effective. According to the researcher, more research is still needed.
4. Quit Smoking
You’ve probably heard about all the negative effects smoking has on your lungs if you’re a smoker. But on top of facial wrinkles and premature greying of hair did you know that smoking could cause hair loss.
There’s a link between smoking and hair loss research has determined that. It may be a good idea to quit smoking as soon as possible to prevent hair loss.
5. Scalp Massage
They can help with your hair loss but not only do massages feel wonderful. Stimulates the hair follicles massaging the scalp.
In one small study, healthy Japanese men had thicker hair who received 4 minutes of scalp massage each day for 24 weeks at the end of the study.
